Youth Alive

CONFERENCE HIGH SCHOOL EVENT
Youth Alive is the official Cal-Pac Conference High School Youth Event. Hundreds youth and chaperones explore several unique cultures and engage with one another. Youth Alive is an energy packed event with interactive sessions and contemporary worship for an emerging generation. Throughout the event we expose youth to different aspects of leadership needed for a global society. High Schoolers from across the conference gather to worship, learn, grow, and challenge each other on this little path we call faith. All of these components make Youth Alive an interactive, and intentionally relational event that leaves all our students enriched and inspired to make a difference in their world.

2012 ~ Crossroads

This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.”
~Jeremiah 6:16

Bible Study

Chris Carter, Bible Study Leader

My name is Christopher Carter and my wife Gabrielle and I hail from Battle Creek, Michigan. We moved to Southern California nearly four years ago, and we are enjoying our time here – especially the weather! While we do not have any children yet, we do have two Labradors named Zeus and Sampson and they keep us busy enough for now. I am a 2nd year PhD student at Claremont School of Theology, where my research focuses on Religion, Cultural Studies, and Environment Theology.

Currently I am beginning the second year of my appointment as the Senior Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Compton. Like the Apostle Paul, I believe the church is called to transform, rather than conform, to the world that we live in. I count myself blessed to be serving a congregation of loving people who are excited about sharing with others how their relationship with God has transformed their lives. As a leader within the United Methodist Church I hope to do all that I can to continue to aid in this transformation project.

Music

Mike Whang is a musician and seminarian from Southern California. His lifelong goals are to read the bible and worship. His favorite foods are Kimchi (fermented cabbage) and San Gyub Sal (Grilled Pork Belly). He also serves as frontman for the Christian soul-rock group, The Nehemiah Band (http://thenehemiahband.com).

Crossroads Speakers

James J. Kang
I am currently serving as Lead Minister of Good Neighbors Church, a young adult ministry of Covenant United Methodist Church, in Pomona, CA. I am driven by the conviction that young people can gather for noble purposes, born of a life of faith, that are just beyond the bounds of convention and casually dismissed as idealistic fantasy.  In line with this conviction, I also serve as Chair of the Riverside District Board of Congregational Development to develop innovative ministry projects that connect with the contemporary aspirations of California’s diverse population in the Riverside District.  I proudly hold a Master of Divinity from Claremont School of Theology.

Nicole Ramos
I am a 24 year old young lady, born and raised in Santa Paula, CA. I grew up in a 3 bedroom condo with a household of 13 people, my grandpa being the sole provider for the Ramos Family. My mother was a single mother most of the time & my father was never around while I was young. He was in and out of prison & left behind my mother, 2 brothers & myself. My mother did the best she could while I was growing up, considering the circumstances of our home. I was raised around gang violence, violence, insecure women, low income families with no drive for life, abuse, alcohol abuse, drug abuse & bad anger. I personally grew up thinking this life style was normal. I went through crossroads in my life where I made bad decisions and I reaped the consequences to those choices. I then was saved by the lord & I knew that I needed to make a change for the better.

Brian Annett
Hi, my name is Brian Annett, I am a 21 year old, born and raised Southern Californian and currently attending Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church in Mission Viejo, CA. I am Junior in College at California State University of Fullerton. Currently I am working on getting my major in Comparative Religion, which will thus help me in my future of becoming a missionary. After achieving my Major in Comparative Religion, I am looking to get my Masters in Masters of the Arts in Global Leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. After returning from Africa in August of 2009 on a mission trip, God opened my eyes to see the need for Bibles not only in Malawi, Africa, but the need for bibles to those who seek the Word of God all over the world. In the beginning of October 2009, God placed on my heart, through a dream, of starting a non-profit organization called One Book One Life. One Book One Life is a non-profit organization designed to send bibles all over the nation to any person in need.  Since the start of One Book One Life, God has been working in my life in so many different ways it is unbelievable. The organization has sent over 500 bibles to eight different countries in less than two years. As God is working in One Book One Life, He is also working in my life, allowing me to grow as a Follower of Christ and helping me to grow closer to the Lord day by day.

Michelle Buessing
My name is Michelle Buessing and I grew up in Iowa and Kansas before moving to California over 10 years ago.  I graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Family Studies and Human Services and received my masters degree from Chapman University in Organizational Leadership in 2004.  I am currently a Coordinator for the Alternative Schools in Orange County working with high risk youth in the field of prevention and education.  I am married to Damian….my super positive and supportive husband and am the mother of the two most beautifully entertaining little girls Payton, 4 and Maya, 2!

Growing up the Methodist church in the midwest gave me a foundation that has served very important through all my young adult years and established a foundation for the way I live my life.  In December 2009 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and at that moment I knew my life was about so much more than the job I held or the things I had.  I say that getting cancer was god’s little way of tapping me on the shoulder and saying “Hey, pay attention…I am trying to tell you something.”  That something is what I feel compelled to share with others.  I am active in fundraising for Susan G Komen and look forward to the day we stand together and celebrate a cure for breast cancer.  Faith, hope and love are the foundation for what got be through my crossroads in life and for that I am thankful.
