Keynote Speaker: Brad Griffin

Brad M Grifin is the Associate Director of the Fuller Institute, leveraging research into resources for leaders, kids, and families (see http://fulleryouthinstitute.org). A native Kentuckian, Brad now lives in Pasadena with his wife Missy and their three children. After 15 years in youth ministry, he now volunteers in student and worship ministries at NewSong Church. In addition to coauthoring Sticky Faith and Deep Justice Journeys, Brad has authored or coauthored a number of youth ministry book chapters and journal articles.

Keynote: “Sticky Faith”

When the “Pompt and Circumstance” fades, what happens to your students? If you’re like most youth ministries, close to half of your graduating seniors pick up their diplomas and ditch their faith. Why is that? For those graduates who remain connected to Jesus, what is it that makes the difference? And how can we be made aware of the ways we may be subtly sabotaging our student’s faith, despite our best intentions?

Drawing research conducted by the Fuller Youth Institute on youth group graduates, we’ll explore practical ways to keep students engaged in your ministry, and more importantly their faith, so that they build faith that sticks.

Deep Justice:  Moving Students from Mission Trips to Missional Living
Brad Griffin
If you’re like most youth workers, mission trips, service projects, and supporting kids through relief organizations are just a few of the ways that you engage your students in serving the least, the last, and the lost.  But if you’re honest, you’re wondering if your students are really being transformed or if they’re more like tourists, sprinting from service event to service event.

Good news:  deep justice is possible – both for your students and for those you’re serving.  This seminar provides a Scripturally-grounded paradigm that moves your ministry beyond short-term bandaids to long-term systemic solutions that benefit both your students and the world around them.  You’ll leave with all sorts of practical ideas and tested learning exercises that youth ministries like yours are already implementing to help move students from mission trips to missional living.

The Emergent Gap: Generational Differences Eroding the Church
Fernando Alcántar
America is an ever-changing nation. Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and the incoming Homeland Generation, have different ways of experiencing their world including politics, society, education, and even religion; and different ways of speaking into their own world in their own language. In this workshop we’ll learn about the generational languages and differences that make each generation unique, how to communicate with one another, and empower each other without patronizing in a Post-Modern, Post-Christian, Emergent culture. We’ll learn how Christianity has been affected by these cultural changes. And we’ll learn how we can adapt our churches and our leadership to these cultural changes without sacrificing our identity. Some of us may be 65, some of us may be 14, but we all have to learn how to live, learn and worship together if we want our church to survive The Emergent Gap.
